Circle The Date
1/3: @ Shore Regional - This one has decided the B-Central Champ every season since 2007, and will be expected to once again.
The lower portion of the lineup looks to be the strength, as Beach has solid talent returning, and some strong numbers. Junior Jesse Bowers is the team's active wins leader with 48 career W's. He is coming off a big 2018 which saw him record 29 wins, and finish 2nd in the District. Also back and poised for even bigger things in 2019, are Kip Lovgren and Riley Simon, who had terrific rookie campaigns that saw Lovgren register 20 wins and finish 3rd in the District, while Simon had 21 wins and placed 2nd in the District. They provide head coach Jeff Bower a strong nucleus to break in some new faces around. Among the newcomers looking to make an immediate impact down low are freshmen Jonah Bowers, Michael Storino, Teddy Jarahian, and Seamus Dolan, who will battle for time in the 106/113 slots.
Graduation hit the Gulls hardest from 138-182, but even though there were some key losses, this will not be an group void of talent or experience. The big name back is junior Jason Sherlock. A 23-bout winner as a frosh, he missed the first half of last year, but came back and was able to advance to the Regions with a 2nd place finish at Districts in his sophomore campaign. He will be joined by a trio of new starters that saw extended action last year. Anthony Luongo (8-3), Jason Schulz (8-3), and George Kaiafas (6-4) all showed potential and received valuable varsity time last season, despite being #2 on the depth chart. Several others from last year's depth pool will also be expected to step in a lineup and make a solid impact, giving the Gulls maneuverability in the middle.
182-up will be where Beach will be least experienced with three out of the four slots projected to be occupied by newcomers. Junior Liam Buday is the lone returning starter here, and is coming off a 16-win sophomore season.
Beach will be an interesting team to watch. Normally when a school this size takes the hit to graduation they did, it can be devastating. But, numbers-wise, this is one of the healthiest programs in the Shore, and their ability to shrug off graduation losses and continue to thrive is remarkable for such a small school. B-Central has gone through either Beach or Shore Regional each season since 2007, and has been one of the Shore's better rivalries over the years. The two meet up on January 3rd in West Long Branch with the inside track to B-Central on the line, and will also be a key bout for Sectional positioning as the Gulls look to make another run at the CJG1 crown.
